Stay off the Naughty List: “Know Before You Fly” Reminds UAS Users to Fly Responsibly this Holiday Season

Awareness Campaign Urges UAS Newcomers to Adhere to Safety Guidelines

WASHINGTON — With drones on the top of many holiday wish lists, Know Before You Fly today reminded consumers about what they need to know before taking to the skies. To stay off Santa’s “naughty list” and keep the skies safe for all, newcomers should consult a few simple guidelines on how, where, and when to fly their aircraft before taking flight. Specifically:

•     Fly no higher than 400 feet
•     Fly within visual line of sight
•     Stay well clear of other aircraft
•     Never fly within 5 miles of an airport without contacting airport authorities or air traffic control
•     Avoid flying over groups and stadium events
•     Keep well away from emergency response efforts, such as fires
•     Beware of FAA airspace requirements (http://www.faa.gov/uas/tfr/)
•     Don’t fly under the influence
·         Make sure to register your device (http://knowbeforeyoufly.org/register-your-drone/)

Consumers can test their knowledge of these guidelines through an interactive quiz on the Know Before You Fly website. The quiz is listed on the multimedia page with other resources, including a safety lesson with ventriloquist and long-time model aviation enthusiast Jeff Dunham and his sidekick Bubba J. In addition, the page features downloads of safety fliers and brochures for distribution by schools, associations and businesses.

The campaign also launched a series of holiday graphics to promote these safety guidelines on social media. The graphics are fully embeddable, and media outlets are encouraged to share them on their digital properties. To embed a graphic, use the following HTML code (please change dimensions as needed):
